Winter Hydration: Tips for High School Athletes

When you think of hydration, your mind probably jumps to summer workouts and sweaty practices. But did you know that winter hydration is just as important? Cold weather can trick your body into feeling less thirsty, but dehydration can still impact your performance and recovery. You may not feel as sweaty as you were during the summer months, but you still need just as many fluids!

Why Hydration Matters in the Winter

  • Cold air leads to water loss. Every time you breathe in and out, you lose moisture—especially in cold, dry air. Over time, this can add up to significant fluid loss.
  • Weaker thirst signals. Your body’s thirst mechanism doesn’t work as effectively in the cold, making it easy to forget to hydrate.
  • Sweat doesn’t stop. Even though you may not feel as sweaty, you’re still losing water through sweat during practices.

Dehydration in the winter can leave you feeling sluggish, reduce your focus, and even increase your risk of injury. Staying properly hydrated supports your endurance, reaction time, and recovery.

Simple Solutions to Stay Hydrated

Here are some simple tips to help you stay on top of hydration this winter:

  • Drink consistently. Aim to sip water or a sports drink throughout the day, not just during workouts.
  • Try warm beverages. If cold water doesn’t sound appealing, switch it up with hot chocolate or hot broths to stay warm and hydrated.
  • Incorporate hydrating foods. Oranges, cucumbers, and soups are great options to boost your fluid intake.
  • Set reminders. Use your phone, a hydration app, or water bottle trackers to help you stay on schedule.

A quick way to check your hydration is to check the color of your urine. If your urine is a dark apple juice color, you are dehydrated! The goal color is more like lemonade.
